"Social and economic factors such as basic education, elementary health care, and secure employment are important not only on their own, but also for the role they can play in giving people the opportunity to approach the world with courage and freedom."

Development as Freedom

Rwinkwavu, Rwanda

The Rwandan government has given MSI 21+ acres of land to build its first school in Rwinkwavu, a village in the poorest province of the country. Perhaps most exciting is that the land is right next to the Partners in Health (PIH) flagship hospital. PIH is an amazing, Harvard-affiliated healthcare NGO and MSI will be working closely with them, creating a symbiotic relationship that gives our students access to great healthcare and their patients access to great education.

The school in Rwinkwavu will initially open with grade 7 then eventually grow to serve grades 7-12.  Grades 7-9 will be separated by gender, while grades 10-12 will be coeducational. The school will be boarding and at capacity will educate a total of 720 students. Each grade will have 60 students and will be divided into two sections with class sizes ranging between 30-35 students. The campus will include a library, science labs, art studio, cafeteria, and field space.
